Introducing Prefabs - Save and reuse tile configurations

Happy August and a belated congratulations to all nominees and winners of this year's ENNIE awards!

The rest of this year is going to be packed with major improvements to Overseer. As always, remember to join our Discord and vote on your favorite community submissions to get them on the roadmap.

Just like the last two updates, this one is jam-packed with new features and improvements - let's dive in!

Prefabs

There are many cases where you might want to reuse a set of tiles you've configured. For example, you might have a roadside encounter that contains stat blocks, a map, some audio, and notes that you want to reuse across campaigns.

Previously, the only way to recreate this tile configuration was to do it by hand - something that took time and effort. Now, Prefabs allow you to save the tile arrangement to reuse later. Here's how it works.

  1. Select one or more tiles you want to save as a prefab

  2. Right-click and select Save as prefab

  3. Give your prefab a unique name, such as "Roadside Encounter"

  4. That's it!

To recreate the prefab, simply find an empty space on the canvas and Right-click > Add prefab and choose your new prefab to instantly create all tiles at once!

Resize sidebar

I'll admit, this one seemed obvious to many people but not to me. After all, Overseer is nearly perfect as-is (emphasis on sarcasm.)

You can now drag the edge of the sidebar to resize it. Your preferred size is saved on close. To reset to the default width, simply double-click the sidebar resize handle. There is a configured minimum and maximum width set which is not configurable. If you feel like you want more or less space, let me know.

Configure FPS

A few users have diligently noted that Overseer runs at a constant 60 FPS and there is no way to change that for high-refresh monitors. I've added a new setting Settings > Session > Max frame rate to allow you to configure between 30 FPS, 60 FPS, 120 FPS, and Unlimited.

Small naming changes

I wanted to call this out specifically because we got really great feedback from a number of users about how language is used in the application.

First, your collection of screens is no longer called a "Session" - it's now called a Campaign. This means you'll see a small variation in menu text such as "New campaign" and "Open recent campaign". This is a small but meaningful change that I hope clears some confusion about what your GM screen actually is.

Additionally, with the introduction of Prefabs, the name "Preset" felt too similar so that's been changed to Template. This only impacts developers at the moment but I wanted to make sure the rationale on the change was clear.

All language has been updated in the application and documentation.
